Jump Start a Hybrid Car on the 12 Volt Post, Never the Big Pack

A hybrid that will not wake up on a cold morning usually has a flat 12 volt battery, not a dead hybrid pack. You can jump it like any car, as long as the clamps go to the right place.

Matt Bolen owns Wrench Services LLC in Rio Rancho and does the work himself. He has over 25 years in the trade, works on hybrids, and holds five MechanicRank Master Mechanic certificates.

Corrales, right next to Rio Rancho, had its first fall freeze between October 22 and October 30 in every year the weather service logged from 2020 to 2025. Cold mornings are when the small 12 volt battery in a hybrid goes flat. That is the battery you jump, through a terminal under the hood. You never touch the big hybrid pack.

  1. A hybrid has two batteries. Only the small 12 volt one gets a jump.
  2. Most hybrids have a jump terminal under the hood, even when the 12 volt sits in the trunk.
  3. Toyota says to idle the helper car about 5 minutes before you press POWER.
  4. No READY light after a jump means a hybrid system check, not more jumping.
  5. Drive at least 30 minutes after the jump so the 12 volt can recharge.

The weather service keeps first freeze dates for the metro. In Corrales, next door to Rio Rancho, the first 32 degree night came on October 22 in 2020, October 25 in 2022, October 29 in 2023, October 30 in 2024 and October 26 in 2025.1

So late October is when the calls start. A hybrid owner walks out, presses the button, and gets nothing. No dash, no READY light, sometimes not even the door locks.

Usually that is the small 12 volt battery. It is a common fix, and you can often get the car going yourself with a set of cables.

Two Batteries, and Only One Gets a Jump

Every hybrid carries two batteries. They do very different jobs.

  • The 12 volt battery. It runs the computers, the dash, the locks and the lights. It wakes the car up and closes the relays that let the hybrid system start.2 This is the one that goes flat, and the one you jump.
  • The hybrid pack. It runs at several hundred volts and feeds the electric motor. It sits behind covers with orange cables and warning labels, usually under the rear seat or at the back of the car.2 You never clamp anything to it.

One thing trips people up. In a hybrid, the 12 volt battery does not spin a starter the way it does in a regular car. It only has to boot the system. So a 12 volt that is too weak to do even that is very low, or near the end of its life.

Why It Happens on Cold Mornings

Cold slows the chemistry inside a lead acid battery. AAA Mid Atlantic has said a battery loses about 35 percent of its strength at 32 degrees and about 60 percent of its cranking ability at zero.3 Those figures come from a December 2016 report, and they are rough. The point holds anyway. A 12 volt that barely worked in September can quit on the first freezing morning.

Rio Rancho has a few things that make it worse.

  • Big day and night swings. The weather service notes the large spread from mild afternoons to cold mornings here in the fall.1 A car parked outside sits through the coldest hour right before you need it.
  • Short trips. A run to the store and back is not long enough to top up a tired 12 volt.
  • Cars that sit. A hybrid parked for two or three weeks, like a second car or a car left while you travel, slowly drains the 12 volt.

Corrales, next to Rio Rancho, was October 22 in 2020, no record in 2021, October 25 in 2022, October 29 in 2023, October 30 in 2024 and October 26 in 2025. The Albuquerque Sunport was October 26, November 18, October 25, October 29, October 31 and November 30. How to Jump a Hybrid, Step by Step

These steps follow the Toyota Prius v owner's manual.4 Most hybrids work the same way, but the terminal spot moves from car to car. Check your own manual first.

  1. Get in. If the fob is dead to the car, pull the metal key out of the fob and open the driver door by hand.
  2. Set it up. Park, parking brake on, everything off. Use thick cables or a good jump pack. Thin cables can overheat.2
  3. Find the jump terminal. Open the hood and the fuse box cover. Lift the small cover marked with a plus sign. On many hybrids the 12 volt battery lives in the trunk or under a seat, and this terminal is the hood end of it.
  4. Red clamp first. Red goes on the jump terminal of the hybrid. The other red end goes on the plus post of the helper battery.
  5. Then black. Black goes on the minus post of the helper battery. The last black clamp goes on solid, bare metal on the hybrid, away from the jump terminal and anything that moves.
  6. Let it charge. Start the helper car and hold the engine a little above idle for about 5 minutes.4
  7. Press POWER. Foot on the brake, press the button, and look for the READY light. The gas engine may not start right away. That is normal.
  8. Take the cables off in reverse order. Last black clamp off first, first red clamp off last. Close the terminal cover and the fuse box cover.

Orange cables mean high voltage. If a clamp, a hand or a tool is anywhere near an orange cable or the rear pack, stop. The 12 volt side is all you ever need for a jump.

If READY Never Comes On

Toyota's own manual is plain about this. If the READY light does not come on after the jump, call a dealer or a qualified repair shop.4 Do not keep cranking the button for twenty minutes.

No READY after a good jump usually points to one of three things.

  • A 12 volt that is past saving. Some batteries are too far gone to take a jump and hold it.
  • A bad connection. A loose or corroded cable at the 12 volt itself, often in the trunk, can stop the car even with a good battery.
  • A hybrid system fault. A warning on the dash with READY missing calls for a scan tool, not more cables.

That last one is where a test beats a guess. A hybrid warning light is not proof the big pack is dead. A scan of the codes and the pack's module readings tells you which part failed. See hybrid battery service for how that test works, or engine diagnostics for the full system scan.

What to Do After the Jump

A jump gets you moving. It does not fix a weak battery.

  • Leave it on. Toyota of Orlando says to keep the car in READY for about 30 minutes after a jump, then get the battery checked.2 Driving is better than idling in the driveway.
  • Get the 12 volt tested. A test shows whether the battery can still hold a charge or is near its end. In that same 2016 report, AAA Mid Atlantic said batteries over three years old should be checked.3
  • Watch the next cold morning. If it needs a second jump within a week, the battery or the charging side has a problem. Do not wait for the third.

How to Keep a Hybrid From Going Flat

A hybrid that sits is the one that dies. Toyota UK gives clear steps for a car that is parked for long stretches.5

  • Run it weekly. Put the car in READY, in Park with the brake on, for about 60 minutes once a week. Never leave it alone while it runs, and never do it in a closed garage.
  • Or drive it. A drive of at least 30 minutes each week does the same job. Toyota UK later said the length of the trip matters more than the speed.
  • Keep the radio off. Lights, fans and the stereo draw power you are trying to save.
  • Use a maintainer. A 12 volt trickle charger or solar charger keeps the battery topped up. Toyota UK said using one does not void the warranty.
  • Move the key. Toyota UK says smart key cars can wake up when the fob is nearby. Store the key away from the car during a long park.

Leaving town for Thanksgiving? Plug in a maintainer before you go, or ask a neighbor to take the car out once a week.

Before You Book

Is it possible to jump start a hybrid car?
Yes. You jump the small 12 volt battery, usually through a jump terminal under the hood. You never jump or touch the high voltage hybrid pack.
How to jump start a hybrid car with cables?
Red clamp on the hybrid's jump terminal, other red on the helper's plus post, black on the helper's minus post, last black on bare metal on the hybrid. Idle the helper about 5 minutes, then press POWER and look for READY.
How to start a hybrid car with a dead battery?
Use the metal key inside the fob to open the door, then jump the 12 volt battery with cables or a jump pack. Once READY shows, drive for at least 30 minutes so the battery can recharge.
What to do if a hybrid battery dies?
First find out which battery. A dark dash and dead locks point to the 12 volt, which is a quick fix. A hybrid warning light with no READY needs a scan before anyone replaces the big pack.
Can a hybrid jump start another car?
Check your own owner's manual first. The Toyota Prius v manual only covers the hybrid getting a jump from a second car, not giving one. A jump pack is the safer way to help a friend.
How long should I drive after jumping a hybrid?
At least 30 minutes. A short trip around the block will not put back what the 12 volt lost. If it goes flat again within a week, get the battery tested.
